Forced Evictions of Tamils temporarily lodging in Colombo June 2007
The expulsion of Tamils temporarily lodging in Colombo, took place on June 7th 2007. Three hundred and seventy six Tamils (291 men and 85 women) were loaded onto buses and taken to a detention camp in Vavuniya. On June 8th, the Centre for Policy Alternatives filed a Fundamental Rights Petition which was upheld by the Supreme Court which issued an injunction on the police to stop these evacuations.
This resulted in the police bringing back the majority of the evacuees to Colombo. President Mahinda Rajapakse reprimanded the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for exceeding his authority and ordered him to submit a report on the incident.
