Kokkadicholai Memorial

Two massacres of Tamil civilians by government forces took place in Kokkadicholai. The first massacre by the Special Task Force of 87 civilians working at shrimp farm in Mahiladitheevu took place on January 28 1987.

The second massacre by the SLA of 152 civilians, in several villages within the Kokkadicholai area, took place on June 12th 1991. The memorial to the first massacre was constructed by the Mahiladitheevu Village Development Council, under the auspices of the LTTE, and inaugurated on January 29, 2003 (during the ceasefire).

It was badly damaged during the last stages of the Eastern operation, in 2007, but was subsequently renovated by the pradeshiya sabha (local govt) of that area.
