PI Mark Frost conducted a solo field trip to Sri Lanka in May 2023 to conduct a series of interviews with community members, artists and academics. Whilst there he also visited heritage sites and conflict memorials in Jaffna, Galle and Colombo.

May 14th - 26th

Colombo, Jaffna, and Galle

Participants: Mark, Hasini and Karu

Colombo

May 14-16 - Mark conducted a series of interviews with individuals from various NGO’s. The collected content from these interviews will be used in future project outputs such as short films and podcast episodes.

Jaffna

May 17 - 19 - As well as interviews with community members, and artist Jasmine Nilani Joseph, Mark visited a number of heritage sites in Jaffna, including the Father Sarathjeevan Memorial. Meanwhile Hasini documented the Arali Point Monument and Fort Hammenniel. Mark also attended Mullivaikal Remembrance Day, a day observed by Sri Lankan Tamils to honour those who died in the last stages of the Civil War.

Colombo

May 20 - 23 - Returning to Colombo, Mark met with Sri Lankan based project staff to collectively work on project outputs. Other interviewees whilst in Colombo included artist and activist Chandragupta Thenuwara.

Galle

May 24 - 26 - Whilst in Galle, Mark visited significant heritage sites that are located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of ‘Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications’.
