Sivakumaran Memorial, Urumpirai

Ponnuthurai Sivakumaran was the first LTTE martyr and the first person to take cyanide and kill himself on June 5 1974, when surrounded by the Police. He tried to kill Deputy Minister of Cultural Affairs, Somaweera Chandrasiri, in Sept 1970, and Alfred Duriappah, in Feb 1971, but failed. His statue was twice destroyed by the Sri Lankan Army.
